Verizon gearing up iPhone ad campaign?

Verizon is preparing to advertise the iPhone, a potentially significant rumor asserted today. Landor Associates, which normally handles much of Verizon’s marketing, is reportedly developing a campaign that would promote the next-generation iPhone in time for its launch. The precise timing of the campaign start wasn’t identified by the tipster.

As Apple often has tight control over TV ads through its agency TBWA/Chiat/Day, CrunchGear notes Landor would most likely handle the marketing in other areas. It’s not uncommon for iPhone carriers to handle some of their own print and retail advertising for the handset, although Apple often has some say over how the handset is presented. For example, the phone often can’t be shown alongside other devices.

It’s speculated that the campaign could be timed for a late summer launch that would back intensifying rumors of an iPhone for Verizon’s network, but doubts still surround whether or not this timing would be the case. Another prominent report had production of a CDMA iPhone only beginning in the fall and could leave any possible launch until late fall or early 2011.

Apple’s exclusivity deal with AT&T may also have stricter limits around when the iPhone can reach other US carriers. It had originally been locked to 2012 but may have changed through intervening years as negotiations for new releases changed the terms.
